Read USD to EUR in the right direction
The converter quotes euros per US dollar: multiply a USD amount by that rate to estimate EUR. The ECB history below uses the opposite convention, USD per EUR. To reverse an individual quote, divide 1 by the quoted rate.
For a euro-priced purchase paid from a USD account, compare the provider’s final USD charge with the EUR price. The reference conversion excludes any card fee or rate markup. Use our card-rate guide and fee calculator to check those costs.
A little historical perspective
These are ECB annual average reference rates for 2020–2024, in USD per 1 EUR. They are historical observations, separate from the converter’s latest snapshot.
| Year | USD per 1 EUR |
|---|---|
| 2020 | 1.1422 USD |
| 2021 | 1.1827 USD |
| 2022 | 1.0530 USD |
| 2023 | 1.0813 USD |
| 2024 | 1.0824 USD |
In these selected years, the annual USD-per-EUR average was highest in 2021 and lowest in 2022. Those yearly summaries hide daily movements and do not predict the next rate. We show the ECB’s original direction rather than taking a reciprocal of an annual average, which would not equal the average of daily inverse rates.

Questions about USD and EUR
How much is 100 USD in EUR?
The converter and common-amount table show 100 USD in EUR using the displayed rate date and source. If rates are unavailable, no estimate is shown.
Why is the USD/EUR number different from EUR/USD?
They express opposite directions. USD to EUR is euros per dollar; EUR to USD is dollars per euro. Their rates are reciprocals when they come from the same snapshot.
Does a historical annual average give today’s rate?
No. An annual average summarizes that year’s reference observations. It is not a current quote or a rate promised by a payment provider.
