Prepare offline currency conversion before a trip

Offline currency conversion multiplies an amount by a rate already saved on your device. Before leaving, open Flexchange online, let rates sync, choose your currencies, and test a conversion without a connection.

Before you leave

  1. Install Flexchange and open it while you have a reliable connection.
  2. Choose the base and target currencies you expect to use.
  3. Wait for rates to load and check the available update information.
  4. Enter a familiar amount and confirm that a result appears.
  5. Temporarily disconnect from Wi-Fi and mobile data, then repeat the calculation.

Test the actual setup you intend to use. Installing the app by itself does not guarantee that rates have already been fetched. If there is no usable rate for a pair, reconnect before depending on it.

What an offline result means

Suppose the last saved rate was 1 EUR = 1.10 USD. A 50 EUR price produces an estimate of 55 USD while offline. If the market or your payment provider has since moved to another rate, the saved calculation cannot know that.

This invented example shows the distinction between correct arithmetic and current data. The multiplication can be correct even when the saved rate is too old for your purpose.

Use estimates for comparisons

Saved conversions can help compare menu prices, shopping costs, or a rough daily budget. Keep fees separate, and avoid treating the estimate as a promised card charge. For an actual payment, use the terms and quote from the provider that processes it.

For several expenses, record each amount with its currency. Convert each into a shared currency before adding them; 20 EUR plus 20 USD is not a meaningful 40-unit total. Our multi-currency expense guide walks through the arithmetic.

After reconnecting

Open the app and allow new rates to arrive. Recheck any estimate that matters before making a transaction. A later saved rate can change the converted total even if the original price has not changed.

Free and Premium both support conversion with previously synced rates. Premium’s more frequent updates apply when updates can arrive; a subscription cannot deliver fresh data to a disconnected device.

Website and app behavior

This checklist describes the iPhone and iPad app. The website uses a separate feed and is not an offline web app. A number remaining visible in an open browser tab does not establish that the website will work after a reload without internet.

Read the offline feature overview, compare Free and Premium, or inspect the rate methodology. If conversion fails after you have synced, contact support with the pair and what you see.
